The Design Process

Being an independent consulting service has many benefits for a service provider or organization looking to have market design and services provided to complete a project or task. One of the many benefits is the cost to outsource versus full time resource in house. Additionally, the perspective of an impartial third-party entity provides a different point of view and insights. However, as with any partnership effort, communication is key to the design phase from conception to reality and launch. Iterations of draft to final view can be reduced to meeting the client expectations if and when clear guidelines and objectives are stated up front.

Three key take-aways that I try to follow when partnering to complete a project or task are as follows:

  1. Establish written, agreed upon goals, objectives and expectations up front.
  2. Provide realistic timeline of events and reviews that align to expectations.
  3. Communicate regularly providing feedback and iteration review throughout process.

What design process experiences or recommendations would you suggest or not?
